HAPPY BIRTHDAAAY YESTERDAY LEX! ... how old are you, anyway?
Boo. A topic on the Mechadrake forum regarding feminists recently popped its head out of the soil and started to turn people into stone. I figure I should say this much. I hate chauvenists (sp), but I hate feminists just as badly. Well, there's different degrees of heat on this sort of thing. Equal rights for women all the way, I'll never dispute that. On the other hand, I face sexism at work all the time. I'm passed up for certain jobs because I'm a weak little girl. But since it usually works to my advantage (like not having to disassemble a heavy market display every damn Sunday night), I usually keep my yap shut. There are some woman who are livid about their careers, and I say more power to 'em. But then there are feminists who try to rip me a new chute with their teeth because I casually mention I might like to stay at home with my kids, or even just work part time while they're young. "FINE! BE A SLAVE TO THE STOVE AND YOUR HUSBAND! BWAAAAAAGH!" I don't bother elaborating my position with such energetic lifeforms, but I will for you nice readers. I want someone to be at home with the kids when they come. I don't care if it's me, David, my mom, or his parents. I'd just as soon want it to be me, because I'm more of a "homemaker" than David is. Plus I could freelance on the side or somesuch. But I don't want my kids being raised on a Disease Farm -- AKA a daycare -- and I sure as hell don't want them coming home to an empty house where they can turn on the computer and visit BarnyardSexFun.com. I'd rather take steps to avoid becoming one of those idiot mothers who scream about the Daily Trend being the root of their child's evil. My mom was home with us kids until I reached grade six, and she was involved in a lot of school activities. But the days of "Mom at home" are over. I won't contest that society is worse or better off because of it. There's always shit going down in society. Sure, there were plenty of stay at home mom's in the 50's, but it's not like every single one was running an efficient Leave it to Beaver household. And Daddy ruled with an iron fist, which probably swung a lot more freely than your parents and grandparents would want you to know. Besides, there's got to be some reason why so many women got sick of being trapped in the house all day and preferred to work for some ding dong instead, right? But don't start giving me grief if I'd like to raise a family the way my mom raised me. It can be done, and it won't set the women's movement back a billion years. And it's been proven -- by my parents, no less -- that it's entirely possible to raise a family and then think about a career. Hell, you probably have more energy for the former in the ascent at your life. I don't think I plan to wait 'till I'm frickin' 35 to have my kids. That way, I'll be ready to have some fun with my life at retirement instead of putting my kids through college. :P I do plan to finish school at the very least before having kids, however. I'm not quite that masochistic. Then again, nursing is only a few years as opposed to people who love to take university for decades. There's a point here somewhere. Oh yeah. Balance. It's all about balance and what makes you happy. So, that's my story, Ms. Feminist. And while we're on the topic, shave your fucking armpits if you're going to wear a tank top! Jesus! I don't care how "natural" it is, I don't want to see dry hunks of deodourant clinging to the forest beside me as I sway on the subway. The cat next door was meowing at our window today. He he, it was so cute. Then it started picking at our screen with its claws. Uh, it wasn't so cute anymore. But I let it do it anyway 'cuz it was such a neat sound. Ping ping ping! David says we'll plead the fifth if the landlord says anything. It's good to have an American husband who comes from the land of Let's Sue Everyone.
